You just ate what??!?
Ice cream cone season has finally arrived. It seems like forever since the last time we went after dinner on a Sunday evening to grab a much needed, delightful ice cream cone.
Off you go, you load up the whole family in the car and drive down to your local ice cream stand. Everyone orders their favorite flavor (mine being anything that includes peanut butter) in either a sugar, cup or waffle cone.
Everyone is enjoying their sweet treat, and the lovely warm weather. You look over at one of your kids, of course ice cream dripping all down their arms, and notice that one of your little tikes has eaten half of the wrapper that encased the cone…YIKES!!
Don’t panic, it’s OK, your little darling will be just fine. For years the FDA has required that the paper wrap and the ink in the paper wrap be made of food-grade material. And not only are the wrappers edible, but also the glue left on an ice cream cone after you peel away the paper. It’s corn syrup, plain old ordinary food-grade corn syrup.
You may ask, “why do I need a paper wrap on my cones? What do they do for me?” With the ever-increasing concerns about food borne illness and sanitation, it ‘s only natural that food companies develop wrappers for ice cream cones. Wrapped cones project an image of cleanliness and show customers that sanitation is a priority.
As a printer for a North American cone manufacturer that sells to a national retailer, we can tell you with certainty that the wrappers we print and the inks that are use on the paper wrap are very much safe.
So the next time you, or one of your children accidentally take a bite of an ice cream cone wrapper, don’t panic. Should you eat them all the time, probably not, but it is safe, not that it’d be that tasty. We advise you stick to eating just the ice cream and the cone.
